- The allocation of resources by Courageous Sailing Center, a non-profit organization with limited financial capacity, towards advanced theatrical facilities, event venues, art exhibition spaces, and a “Great Hall” (comprising three year-round assembly areas) raises questions regarding its alignment with the core mission of a sailing institution.
- The current proposal is problematic due to its obstruction of water access and historical harbor views from the Boston Harborwalk, a concern amplified by the impending 250th Anniversary of Bunker Hill.
- The plan to construct concrete-encased classrooms, relocating them away from the waterfront, represents a departure from the traditional open and airy waterside learning environments.
- The necessity for a sailing center in Boston to develop expensive indoor virtual maritime theaters and art spaces is questionable, given the city’s existing array of prominent art museums and science institutions.
- In the context of contemporary climate change concerns, the demolition and reconstruction of a structure with a significant carbon footprint warrant scrutiny. It is unclear whether a Carbon Capture Audit was conducted, especially considering the BPDA report’s assessment that the original structure was only suitable for pedestrian weight, not a multi-story concrete edifice.
- The proposal appears to have overlooked several critical considerations, including traffic management, parking availability, utility access, the impact on the aging population, infrastructure demands, seawall integrity, compliance with ADA and EPA regulations, preservation of Harborwalk views, management of toxic waste, pollution control, carbon footprint reduction, and climate resilience strategies.
- The community expresses a strong desire for a thriving Courageous Sailing Center that ensures full public water access and upholds the promised view easements from the Harborwalk.
- These concerns are shared by 12,500 individuals who advocate for a successful and accessible Courageous Sailing Center with protected view easements.
- The Pier 5 Association supports the fundamental mission of Courageous Sailing but expresses reservations about the “bloated, bogged down” program proposed for the two piers.
