What is the Zoning Commission?
The Boston Zoning Commission (BZC) is an appointed body that maintains and updates Boston’s zoning code. The BZC meets monthly to consider petitions to change the Code. In addition to adopting map and text changes, the BZC also considers applications for special zoning designations such as Planned Development Areas (PDAs) and Institutional Master Plans (IMPs).
Anyone may petition the Zoning Commission to adopt a change to the zoning code. In this event, staff write a report with a recommendation to BZC. The BPDA Board, via Planning Department staff, may also petition the Zoning Commission to adopt changes after a public dialogue and planning process.
Participating in Hearings
Zoning Commission meetings are public hearings. The public can participate in hearings by offering written comments ahead of time or by attending Zoom meetings and verbally offering public comment. Written comments can be submitted by email to ZoningCommission@Boston.gov or by post to 1 City Hall Square, 9th Floor, Boston, MA 02201.
