Since 1987, Courageous has operated from Pier 4, an ideal location offering access to diverse sailing areas and serving nearby communities.
Pier 5 public revival aligns with Courageous’s mission of accessibility and inclusion. Additional space would allow for expanded scholarships, public sailing events, and new educational programs in maritime science and climate resilience.
Space constraints remain a challenge: Limited shelter, no indoor facilities, and a lack of boat storage hinder program expansion and create weather-related disruptions.
In 2022, emergency repairs forced a temporary relocation to Pier 3, impacting operations and finances.
By integrating Courageous Sailing into the park’s design, Pier 5 will become a vibrant hub for recreation, learning, and community engagement, ensuring Boston’s waterfront remains open and enriching for all.
The park’s design, incorporating climate-resilient infrastructure such as floating wetlands and stormwater management systems, will also protect the neighborhood from rising sea levels and urban heat, creating a healthier living environment for families who have historically faced the brunt of environmental challenges.
